Learning By Seeing – Swans | Naperville Lifestyle Photographer

Lately, I seem to be really lucky in spotting wildlife. A couple of weeks back on our Spring break trip to Rocky Mountain National Park we saw Elk, Big horned Sheep, Deer and a variety of birds (those images can be seen in this Unlikely Models post). This past weekend we saw this majestic swan in our community lake. What a treat!!!!

Β It was a routine Spring Sunday afternoon. The whole family was out biking and saw this beauty basking in the sun, grooming herself (I am assuming it was a she because she spent a good 45 minutes taking turns swimming and grooming herself :)). We cut short our bike ride and the kids came with me to take pictures. I LOVE such hands-on nature lessons. The kids observed her mannerism and when we got back to the house, we researched about swans on the internet.

Here is what we found through our research

1) Swans are one of the largest flying birds

2) Their wings can span up to 10ft

3) They can be quite aggressive when provoked and use their powerful wings are a defense mechanism…as this silly goose found out πŸ™‚

4) They feed on aquatic vegetation, small fish and tadpoles

5) They are absolutely beautiful and quite majestic πŸ™‚

The pictures validated the research! – πŸ™‚

Michelle S Hanks - These are magnificent. You really caught the “reality” of wild life. Great job, see, a photographer is always ready for awesome shots with thier camera (even if it is their iPhone sometimes). On the truck (we are truck drivers right now) I use myniphone for most stuff.

Beth - Great photos! I love wildlife photos.

Jade - Beautiful!

Jete Devisser - These are great! We have TONS of geese around here, and they freak me out! They can be super agressive too. The swans are gorgeous.

Conchita Medel - Great blog post! I really enjoyed all the pictures, what a beautiful animal!
