How I view Food and Sun Flare

I love my blog circle group. Not only is each and every one of them an amazing photographer in their own right, but they are such a creative bunch. In the beginning of the year, we created a list of blog post topics for the year that were above and beyond the norm – these were topics to stretch our existing skills and imagination! ๐Ÿ™‚

This month’s blog circle is about Food and Flare (sun flare). Having procrastinated all month, I finally figured out what I wanted to do for this only to have thunderstorms for three days straight with little to no sun. I think we got all of 15 minutes of sun these past few days and I ran out of the house, pizza and pineapple in hand to get photographs of food using natural light during sunset i.e. golden hour!

This was probably the only day last week that we had some sun! – my neighbors have given up on me. I have been known to run out in the rain and snow to take pictures. But this took the cake in a way, because I was sitting in the middle of my driveway, almost on the road, moving my plate of pineapple wedges chasing the sun flare…..LOL

After my 30 second sun flare + food photography experiment, I opted for the traditional food /fruit photography pictures – with a white painted board and soft white diffusor. Could you guess these were taken around noon with a south facing window directly on the left of the fruit!

Follow along to my super talented landscape and macro photographer, Nadeen‘s blog – her food and flare shots are sure to amaze and you have to check out the rest of her portfolio – especially the SF bridge shot that is part of her opening slideshow (click on Home)…WOW! isn’t it stunning!!!

6 on 6 Favorite Images Naperville Lifestyle Photographer

The month of May has been a crazy whirlwind of a month. Between family portraits, styled photoshoots, weddings, lifestyle headshots andย branding exercises – I feel like I haven’t really put my camera down to stop and take a look at all that has come to be. Sure, I download images and take a quick glance, pick out my favorites and provide sneak peeks for my clients but my personal images tend to take a back seat during the busy months.

Which is why I really love my blog circle of photographer friends. Our monthly blog circles are a great way to take some time and either photograph for yourself with a specific theme in mind or look through your images for ones that are your current favs. Our “6 on 6” is my favorite ๐Ÿ™‚ as I get to browse my personal images and pick 6 that are my current favorite ๐Ÿ™‚

True to the Spring/Summer weather we are currently experiencing, I found myself gravitating towards images where the primary subject was “LIGHT” I love the warm summer glow – there is something so magical about this time of year and the evening light!

This sunset was stunning – especially since I took this image from a rest area during our first road trip of the season! – Yay for road ย trips!!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

Its just not fair that Lilacs bloom for such a short time! – I want this gorgeousness all year round….

This one! – she takes my breadth away every time I see her. She always sits so majestically and when I found her the other day basking in the sun’s glow, I could see this image even before I took it. Pet portraits during the golden hour areย simply stunning.

Who says only natural light is magical! – A simple street light adds so much drama – I wish I had a willing model handy to place under the tree!

This image was taken in the morning light as opposed to the other sunset/ golden hour images from earlier – Morning light adds an element of softness that seemed to fit completely with this new growth pine tree in my backyard.

This has nothing to do with light – morning or golden hour….this image just makes me smile every time I see it…I love these little duck bottoms…almost seems like a photograph of synchronized swimmers…LOL

How I view Shadows and Black&White Imagery

This month’s blog circle post is very interesting and thought provoking (to me, at least :)). Thats because I love color and after an especially long, cold winter, I am loving the burst of color all around as Spring makes it way into my life. So when my fellow photographers in my monthly blog circle picked Black and White Imagery and Shadow play as the topic for this month’s blog circle, I was a bit stumped.

Upon researching the best Black and White images and Shadow play, I realized that landscapes, wildlife and people photograph really well in B&W images. For a Lifestyle Photographer who enjoys all these three genres, I was thrilled! Shadows was a little harder to think about and photograph but I love a good challenge!!! ๐Ÿ™‚

House Entryway in the shadows

If you have been following this blog at all, you know how mountain crazy I am ๐Ÿ™‚ – I must say I am loving the look of these landscape photos of ย snow capped mountains in Black and White – makes them seems even more majestic (if that is even possible…LOL).

Something about photos of palm trees and blades of grass gently blowing in the wind evokes the wanderlust in me ๐Ÿ™‚

One of the spiciest red chills ever! – these are deadly!!

The black, white and tan of a Belgian Malinois mix really pops in this B&W image (What can I say, I am very biased…I love this little 90 pound munchkin!!!)

Oh my world…this stork was dancing on water! I was mesmerized for a good 20 minutes before I remembered to periodically click the shutter as well…LOL

These stacking dolls finally got used for something…LOL. This setup was with a white board and a small flash light pointed at a 45 degree angle to the board….a simple DIY light box ๐Ÿ™‚

Entrepreneurial Lessons From The Field

What do a chef, an organic farmer and a florist have in common?

These are three successful entrepreneurs living in the outskirts of a big metro city. None of them have a college degree – in fact, two out of the three haven’t even gone to school. But yet, they run thriving businesses that support their family and put food on the table.

During my recent stay in India, I had a chance to observe and interact with these women. I watched them for a couple of days and was definitely intrigued with their business model. They had a steady stream of customers who were loyal to the point where they could not imagine life without these women (my mom’s household included). But these women were neither arrogant nor did they flaunt their successes. In fact, they were so genuine and down to earth that even I wanted to become a loyal customer – I just had to figure out a way to get food, flowers and fresh vegetables shipped across to the US ๐Ÿ™‚

These women are not millionaires and nor do they have aspirations of becoming one. But each of them has something much more valuable than money itself – job satisfaction and genuine passion for their profession. They came to work every morning with a smile on their face, a skip in their step – ready to make the most of their day. What was their secret? I just had to know. I chatted with them over the course of my visit and what I learnt was so basic, yet so thought provoking!

First up this beautiful lady named Tangamani who is an organic farmer. She does not own a farm but she sells organic produce that she buys from nearby farms who don’t have the man power to go door to door to sell their produce. She makes her rounds bright and early in the morning – her products are 100% organic, freshly picked from the farm (most even have the morning dew still on them). Tanga’s secret – she really knows her customers and makes a mental note on what they buy each day. Somehow magically her next day’s produce is a complement to what her customers bought the previous day. Brilliant, I say!

‘Really know your customers and anticipate their next need /want before they know it! ‘

Mangla is the florist who bought fresh flowers to our doorstep everyday. I must say, the house smelled divine after she left. She was certainly the expert. She really knew her flowers and took her role as the subject matter expert very seriously!

Side story – I love the Indian Jasmine flower. When I go home, I hound my mom everyday to buy me some so I can put them in my hair and feel beautiful :). One day, I saw that Mangla had some and I asked her for it. But Mangla refused. She said “No, these are not good today and they will not last more than a few hours. I will bring you better ones tomorrow”. I had to do a double take. Here was a vendor who did not want to sell me a faulty product. She could have made some easy money off me but instead she was honest and was not afraid to say NO!

‘Earn your customers’s trust – Be true to them by providing them with the very best products – nothing else will do’

Meet Lakshmi and her adorable side kick, her daughter. Lakshmi is a chef/cook. She goes to homes in the neighborhood and cooks fresh food for the families. She also runs a food cafeteria out of her home. Lakshmi is an amazing cook. She is the best for those who want fresh food that is exactly how your mom makes it :). But she is more than a great cook – she is very personable, reliable and trust worthy.

Can you believe there is a waiting list of families who want Lakshmi to come cook for them. She is known through out the community and has created quite a niche for herself.

‘Built a strong brand and a community of loyal customers – they will follow you for years to come’

I was so much in awe of all these incredible women I met. I offered to take photos for them and they were so thrilled. Most of these women have never had their photograph taken and when I showed them the images at the back of my camera, they were so pleased ๐Ÿ™‚ – it was such a thrill for me too!

None of these entrepreneurial lessons is new yet these women, who don’t have any formal education in entrepreneurship, have mastered these basic concepts and are incredibly successful (each has their own definition of success).ย They don’t have fancy tools like websites, social media, business cards etc – they are their brand and their business. Each has a superior product/skill , they are street smart and have wonderful personalities that shine forth in their daily interactions with their clients!

Just look at their smiles – each and everyone of these women is amazing – I dare you not to smile back ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚
